When 1923 premiered, creator Taylor Sheridan had a clear mantra for the second Yellowstone prequel: “make them earn it.” It seems Sheridan truly understands the art of longing, crafting a new chapter in the Dutton family saga filled with epic journeys, lost love, and family drama worthy of a Greek tragedy.

The Dutton Family Dynamics

With characters scattered across continents since the season 1 finale, fans have been eagerly awaiting reunions. Julia Schlaepfer, who portrays Alexandra Dutton, shares that while fans were on tenterhooks, the characters’ adventures continued. “Between the time we saw her last and now in season two, [Alex] is learning to figure things out for herself,” Schlaepfer reveals. It’s a journey of growth that fans can relate to—because who hasn’t felt like they’re in a perpetual state of self-discovery?

Alexandra’s romance with Spencer Dutton, played by Brandon Sklenar, is a testament to Sheridan’s knack for combining melodrama with genuine emotion. As Schlaepfer puts it, “She’s got this fiery side, and that’s very much a Dutton trait.” Talk about a family that puts the ‘fun’ in dysfunctional!

The Rainwater Legacy

But it’s not just the Duttons who have a legacy to uphold. Aminah Nieves, who plays Teonna Rainwater, brings to life one of the most compelling characters in the Yellowstone universe. Teonna is the grandmother of Gil Birmingham’s Thomas Rainwater, the modern-day “frenemy” of the Duttons. Nieves is excited for audiences to see Teonna’s softer side this season. “I think it’s really important to see the side of her, not only for herself, but for the audience too,” she explains. And let’s face it, who doesn’t love a good redemption arc?

Fierce Female Characters

Whether it’s Alexandra, Teonna, or newcomers like Jennifer Carpenter’s Mamie Fossett, Sheridan has a knack for writing fierce female characters. Carpenter, known for her role as Debra Morgan on Dexter, joins the Yellowstone universe as a no-nonsense US Deputy Marshall. “I think one thing that is part of Taylor’s magic is his curiosity,” Carpenter notes. “Because Taylor wrote her,” she adds, suggesting that any character Sheridan pens is bound to leave an impression.

So, buckle up for season 2 of 1923, premiering on Paramount+. With a legacy as rich as the Dutton and Rainwater families, it’s bound to be a wild ride. As they say in the Wild West, “Hold onto your hats!”
